We had a great turnout at our first KW, Guelph, Cambridge Interclub Tournament
On May 6, 2017, the KW, Cambridge and Royal City Badminton (Guelph) clubs hosted our first ever Tri-City Tournament. There was a great turnout of 87 registered badminton players from all three clubs and a few guests.
The day began with registration commencing at 9 am. Surprisingly, even at 8:30, the facility was already full with members warming up on all courts eagerly waiting for the tournament to begin.
Participants in the tournament included some seasoned veteran players as well as some young, up and coming junior players, and some adults who have taken up the sport in recent years.
For those that were newer to badminton, the event provided an opportunity to play in a tournament outside of their own club tournaments for the very first time. Many players were very happy with the A, B, C, D structure which enabled players of various levels to still have a chance to win even after being defeated by a tough opponent.
After a full day of competitive play, and some tough fought matches, below is a summary of our tournament winners.
Men’s Doubles:
A Flight Winner: Ly Lam and Kenny Tran
A Flight Finalist: Jeffrey Phung and Gerry Fung
B Flight Winner: Dave Browne and Alan Yip
C Flight Winner: Tai-Cheng Chen and James Tonogai
D Flight Winner: Wasiq and Ashfaq Ahmed
Ladies Doubles:
A Flight Winner: Ruxandra Zamfir and Sang Duong
A Flight Finalist: Anne Marie Laurence and Shannon Nguyen
B Flight Winner: Pierette Parnell and Melanie Chaplier
Mixed Doubles:
A Flight Winner: Pierette Parnell and Rob Parnell
A Flight Finalist: Jeffrey Phung and Shannon Nguyen
B Flight Winner: Melanie Chaplier and Lionel Neyts
C Flight Winner: Dorathy Tam and Loui Vuletici
Off court, many players relaxed in the lounge area and mingled with friends as well as get a few ping pong games in. A delicious lunch was served from 12-2 pm by Café Du Monde Creperie Food Truck which provided healthy and some of the most delicious crepes ever served.
In addition to the activities on court, Team Challenge Boxes were also prepared for some off court competition. Congratulations to Team Tai-Cheng Chen and James Tonogai for building the tallest marshmallow supporting structure and winning the Team Challenge Event.
