We've Been Here
Since 1931.
And We're Not
Going Anywhere.

K-W Badminton Club is one of the oldest and most storied racquet sports clubs in Ontario. Here's how we got here — and why it matters.

It Started With a Curling Club and a Vision for Sport in This Community.

In 1927, the K-W Granite Club was established at 69 Agnes Street as part of the Athletic Association of Kitchener and Waterloo. Four years later, in 1931, badminton took hold inside those walls — and never left.

For decades, badminton and curling shared the building, two sports under one roof, bound by a common belief that this community deserved a serious place to play. When the curling members relocated to new premises in Waterloo in 2003 and the building was sold, the badminton community refused to walk away. They negotiated, incorporated, and kept the courts alive.

The K-W Badminton Club Inc. was born — a standalone not-for-profit organization, governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, run entirely by and for its members.

Then in November 2013, the club did something remarkable: it purchased the building outright. The courts, the galleries, the hardwood floors — all of it now belongs to the membership. Nearly a century after that first shuttlecock was struck inside these walls, this club still stands. Still plays. Still grows.

The Facility

Six of Ontario's finest dedicated badminton courts sit under 35-foot ceilings — no compromises, no conversions. Two large viewing galleries overlook the playing area. Full change rooms with lockers and showers. Free parking on site. Open 52 weeks a year.

Who We Are

We're a member-managed, volunteer-run non-profit with over 300 members. Our community spans every level — complete beginners, recreational regulars, junior athletes, and competitive adults who play at the national level. Some of our members are still playing well into their 80s. The club is kept alive by hard work and genuine love of the sport.

Federal Minister and Local MP Visit K-W Badminton Club

On May 12, the K-W Badminton Club welcomed the Honourable Adam van Koeverden, Secretary of State (Sport), and MP Tim Louis for a special visit celebrating grassroots sport and community inclusion in Waterloo Region. Waterloo Mayor Dorothy McCabe also attended, underscoring the broad community support for the club. Representatives from ProSmashers Canada and the Tamil Sports Association of Waterloo Region joined alongside club members, creating a gathering that reflected the cultural diversity and spirit that defines sport in our region.

Secretary van Koeverden spoke to Canada’s continued commitment to community sport participation, with a particular emphasis on inclusion, diversity, and active healthy living. Speaking immediately after the visit, he called the club “awesome” and reflected on the particular power of badminton to bring people together across cultures, ages, and ability levels — and on the pleasure of stepping onto the court alongside MP Tim Louis, a friend and parliamentary colleague.

Secretary van Koeverden, MP Tim Louis, and Mayor McCabe played badminton alongside club members during the May 12 visit.

A highlight of the morning came when Secretary van Koeverden, MP Tim Louis, and Mayor McCabe stepped onto the courts and played alongside club members — demonstrating genuine enthusiasm for the sport and creating a memorable experience for all in attendance.

In a particularly warm moment, club President Harsha Gandi shared his Ontario Masters Championship medal with Secretary van Koeverden, who examined it with evident admiration — a fitting symbol of the competitive excellence that grassroots clubs like K-W Badminton make possible.

“As both a player and Club President, it was incredibly meaningful to see our badminton community recognized at this level. For a club with nearly 100 years of history, this was a special moment that highlighted the growth of badminton in Waterloo Region and the lasting value of community sport in bringing people together.”
— Harsha Gandi, President, K-W Badminton Club

The K-W Badminton Club is one of Canada’s longest-continuously-operating badminton clubs, founded in 1931. The club is currently undertaking a significant modernization and facility improvement initiative, with investments planned across building infrastructure, technology, court upgrades, and member amenities — ensuring K-W Badminton remains a premier destination for the sport for generations to come.
